Discover Belize

Why not take a guided tour the day before, or the day after, your charter? Belize offers some of the most amazing natural wonders, and archaeological sites only recently discovered! Travelling to this, as yet under-developed country, without visiting Central America's version of the Pyramids would be only half a vacation! We offer you the opportunity to discover Belize, at TradeWinds Cruise Club discounted rates, with a personal guide!

Tours on offer, are as follows;

  • Monkey River tour
    Located 12 miles south west of Placencia, and only 30 minutes through the mangroves by boat, the Monkey River drains both the Bladen and Swasey watersheds, now under protective status. Upon arrival at the Creole fishing village of the Monkey River, your experienced local guide will come aboard for the 3 to 4 mile trip upstream. You'll learn all about mangrove growth and habitat whilst watching for tropical birds, manatees, dolphins and the occasional crocodile. Venturing ashore, you'll walk through the jungle in search of gibnuts, deer, ocelots, peccaries, tapirs, coatimundis, agoutis and of course the Howler Monkey. Get ready to cover your ears - their howls can be heard for over a mile! After a refreshing dip in the river, and your return to the village, lunch is served. On the return journey, you'll stop at Harvey's Cay to see Manatees. This tour is suitable for all ages, costs US$70.00 per person, and starts daily from 8.00am.
  • Mayan Ruin and Cave or Waterfall Tour
    The southern Mayan ruin site of Nim Li Punit is only a 90 minute drive away from Placencia making it truly accessible. Composed of three main areas, this Late Classic (Approx. 500 A.D.) site was first discovered in 1976. The name is Maya for "Big Hat" and was taken from the person wearing a very large headdress on the tallest "stela" (standing stone). Of the 26 stela to be found at the site, this standing stone, measuring in at 9 meters (31 feet), is the second tallest carved stela in the Maya World! Combined with the largest "ball court" of any ruin in Belize, archaeologists have surmised that Nim Li Punit, during its' heyday, was prominent site for the Maya culture. After a hearty lunch it's a 10 minute trip to explore either a beautiful waterfall or, an amazing cave system. Whichever one you choose, don't forget your bathing suit and towel, as you can swim in either! This tour is suitable for all ages, costs US$115.00 per person and starts daily from 7.00am.
  • Cockscomb Sanctuary tour
    This unique sanctuary in southern Belize is only an hour drive away from Placencia. Covering 150 square miles of tropical forest it was declared a forest reserve in 1984 and in 1986 became the world's only Jaguar Preserve. Your guide will take you on a hike of jungle trails where you'll visit a waterfall and even tube down the river! Though Jaguar sightings are rare - these masters of stealth rely on seeing you and not being seen - you may see other large cats such as the Puma, Ocelot, Jaguarundi and Margay. These species, combined with large population densities of of Peccary, Paca, Brocker Deer, Tayra, Otter and Coatimundi, as well as all the unique varieties of flora make this tour a botanical and wildlife extravaganza. This tour is suitable for all ages, costs US$80.00 per person and starts daily from 7.30am.
  • The Mayan Ruins Tour
    Fancy letting the Indiana Jones in you, out? After visiting Nim Li Punit, instead of visiting the waterfall or cave, why not visit the ruins of Lubaantun where a real life "crystal skull" was discovered? Lubaantun, "Place of Fallen Stones", is a wonder of architectural design. Each of it's 11 major structures were constructed entirely without mortar. Each stone was carefully measured and cut to fit exactly with the stone it adjoins, making the strength of each structure entirely dependent on this fit rather than any form of cement. Astonishing when you think that the site was developed over 1,500 years ago! This tour is suitable for people with an intermediate level of agility and fitness, costs US$115.00 per person and starts daily from 7.30am.
  • Archaeological tour
    You'll drive 90 minutes from Placencia to visit the Mayflower Archaeological Reserve, one of Belize's best kept secrets! Located in the Stann Creek District of Belize, at the base of the Maya Mountains, it was designated as a National Park in 2001. It's comprised of over 7,000 acres of pristine lowland broad-leaf forest containing a large variety of plants and wildlife and over 200 species of bird. Climbing to the top of one of the multiple waterfalls, offers amazing views of the Belizean coast and the opportunity to cool down with a refreshing dip in the numerous swim holes. The archaeological reserve status derives from evidence of an ancient Maya City including various Mayan ruins and 2 large, as yet unexcavated, Mayan mounds - not to be missed! This tour is suitable for people with a higher level of agility and fitness and costs US$85.00 per person, and starts daily from 7.30am.

For all the tours we highly recommend that you bring; sun screen, bug spray, swim suit, hiking shoes/sneakers, cap, sunglasses and a towel. For the "Jungle" Tours (Monkey river, Cockscomb and Mayflower) some guests may prefer to wear long sleeves and/or long trousers (pants) as - after all- it is jungle and the bugs can be worse. However, if they have a really good bug spray then they would not need to wear these.
